How to expand my vocabulary? By reading many books quickly or a book slowly?

For example, should i read 5 books quickly in 1 week( skipping words i don't understand) OR should i read 1 book in 1 week, constantly looking up words in the dictionary so i completely understand.

My high school teacher says to read a lot of books, and the more i read the better i'll understand the words since ill come across it many times which will avoid making me looking them up in the dictionary.

Please help, i need you to answer my question! Give me your opinion about how to expand my vocabulary Thank you!

You won't expand anything if you skip the words you don't know. A broad vocabulary comes with time. It's great you want to cultivate one. That will help you in life.

But equally important to a board vocabulary is the ability to express yourself. So, I would say aim to read a book a week. The more you read, the less time you'll spend looking up words. And read different types of books - fiction, non-fiction. Read novels and every now and then read something different like a small book of philosophy or a business book or a biography or a travel book. They will help both with vocabulary and your understanding of the world.

It's not enough to have a good vocabulary, you need something to say or communicate. Education is a life-long process. And believe it or not, it's fun!

Good on you for wanting more.

well, your teacher is right and wrong. Context clues will help you identify the meaning of many words, but keeping a small note book to write down words you don't already know to look them up later is a lot more helpful. The human mind is powerful, so you will probably remember when you are looking up the definition, what context the word was used in. Also making it a point to use a new word several times in a day will help. I like to open the dictionary to a random page and finding the first unfamiliar word.

Read a lot of books that will help expand your vocabulary. Don't just read 5 books quickly in 1 week. Read 1 book every week.

Read a lot of books. Maybe not five a week, but maybe two a week if they're smallish. If you find a word that you don't know, re-read the sentence and try and figure out other words that would fit. Like... this sentence:

"I am disinclined to acquiesce to your request." (yes, i know, it's from pirates, and, essentially, it really does just mean 'no'.)

Disinclined: Know that the prefix dis- means something negative. "Inclined" means willing in this context. So, NOT willing.

Acquiesce: That's hard to break down, so you'd probably just have to skip that one.

Okay, so you know now that the person is NOT willing to do something. But what are they not willing to do? Usually, the easiest way to figure this out is to re-read the sentence before it, the sentence itself and the sentence after it. Then, if you still don't get it, look it up.

I hope this helps. :)

Seeing the word used several ways in various stories is a good way.

Still, I think, you need to look up a word to get official denotation

no, just read them slowly. My writing has improved by like 500 miles and my language too since I read the Twilight series, but u don't have to read those.
