What are some fantasy alternative books to Lord of the Rings? For fantasy and either about the same size of a one volume LOTR? Or a book series that is larger or the same size, either a book series or an individual book?

Discworld by Terry Pratchett, there are like forty books SO FAR. I also recommend The Inheritance Cycle (Eragon) by Christopher Paolini.

The King of Elflands Daughter by Lord Dunsany.

The best - mainly because it doesn't shamelessly try to echo Tolkien - is Stephen Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.

this website is the absolute best for that kind of thing: http://www.whatshouldireadnext.com/index.php

But I would recommend anything by T.A. Barron, especially the Lost Years of Merlin series
