I have recently become interested in Sherlock Holmes and want to buy all of the original stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I think there are 60 short stories and four novels. Does anyone know of a book that has all of these in one? Also, if you happen to know of any really good authors that have written Sherlock Holmes novels, feel free to include their names and the books they wrote.

Thanks,
~Sam

Sherlock Holmes is one of my all time favorites! Here's a link to a book available on amazon that has all 56 short stories and all 4 novels. There is a book that just came out titled Dust and Shadow: An Account of the Ripper Killings by Dr. John H. Watson written by Lyndsay Faye about Sherlock Holmes written from the point of view of his companion, Dr. Watson. I haven't read it yet, but have heard it's good. I've included a link to that on amazon also. Hope you enjoy! Happy reading! :)

There are 56 original short stories and 4 original novels, and there are actually two slightly variant versions: The Complete Sherlock Holmes (American text) and The Annotated Sherlock Holmes (British text) with several articles and hundreds of footnotes throughout the text. Before there was one volume there were 8 or 9 books: 'A Study in Scarlet' & 'The Sign of Four', 'The Hound of the Baskervilles', 'The Valley of Fear', Adventures, Memoirs, Return, His Last Bow, Casebook. There is also a book titled: 'Sherlock Holmes: The Published Apocrypha' which contains a few 'extra-Conanical' stories related to Sherlock Holmes including:

How Watson Learned the Trick (Conan Doyle written parody)

The Man With the Watches (Conan Doyle written with the following cryptic sentence: "A recent communication (the authenticity of which appears to be above question) has, however, thrown some new and clear light upon the matter.")

The Lost Special (containing a letter from "an amateur reasoner of some celebrity")

The Case of the Man Who was Wanted (once thought to be a Conan Doyle story)

There is also an outline for a story prepared by Conan Doyle then rejected.

Here is an assignment for you: compare the beginnings of 'The Adventure of the Cardboard Box' and 'The Adventure of the Resident Patient,' and see if you can tell the difference then try to find out why this happened.

If you insist upon the pastiche, there is a collection called "The Exploits of Sherlock Holmes" based upon Watson's references written by Adrian Conan Doyle (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's son) & John Dickson Carr. I hope this helped.

He was a medical doctor (as was Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote the Holmes and Watson stories). When he first meets Sherlock Holmes, Watson has just returned to England after serving abroad as a doctor with the British Army.

Sam,

I too enjoy Sherlock Holmes. Although I don't have an answer for your question, I would like to recommend the television show by Granada Television staring Jeremy Brett. He is a great Sherlock and the show uses the original stories that you are referring to.

Also, Hollywood is making a Sherlock movie starring Robert Downy Jr. I'm looking forward to seeing that.

I really like Gutenberg project but if you are like me and would appreciate a good-looking well bound book that you can keep forever, Barnes and Noble or Borders normally cares these title in a store produced volume.

Barnes and Noble, I have noticed, often sells these titles in soft cover, while Borders normally sells them in hard back (and often on sale).

Besides Sherlock, I also have picked up Complete works of Louis Carroll, Emily Dickinson, and Edgar Allen Poe.

I'd say shop around, since the stories are in the public domain you can get them in any price range.

As for Imitation Holmes stories, I'd say skip them. I've read about a half dozen of these and they are always inferior to the real thing.
