Part of Voldemort's soul had latched onto Harry. That bit had to die.
But without knowing it, Voldemort had ensured Harry would live by using his blood to resurrect himself.
So when he was "killed", Harry was still tied to the earth through Voldemort.
this is why he didn't die, just like Voldemort couldn't be killed when his Horcruxes were still intact - part of him was still "alive" on earth.
Another thing that helped him was that Voldemort never conquered the Elder Wand from its previous owner, while Harry did gain its loyalty (Draco "won" the wand from Dumbledore unknowingly, so it was loyal to him, but then Harry beat Draco, so Harry was the true Owner of the wand despite both of them never touching it). The wand wouldn't kill its own master, so the curse backfired and killed Voldemort instead. (first the part of Voldemort's soul living in Harry, then when they duelled it killed Voldemort himself.)
Hope that helps.
Supposing that Harry was not killed with the Avada Kadavra curse again like so many years before, thats fine, but the curse should not have been able to get rid of the bit of Voldemorts soul in Harry. The only thing that we know of that can kill a horcrux is Feind fire and Basilisk venom, not avada kadavra. And also I thought the protection given to him by his parents sacrifice was supposed to have been up once he turned 17. Thats why Voldemort waited so long to try and kill him after the scene in the graveyard in the 4th book, cuz even if he couldnt kill him cuz of the protection he knew he could once it was up. And another thing I thought that the only reason, according to the 2nd book, that Voldy couldn't touch Harry was cuz of that protection which burned him, with it gone he could touch Harry, hurt him like in the 4th book. If he could hurt him then, why not now. If he could hurt him back then when he had Harry's blood why didnt he kill him this time. And we've already said that it couldnt be the protection which should have gone once he turned 17, and the bit of soul shouldnt have been destroyed through avada kadavra. So technically he should have died. Like Hermione said if i took a sward and ran him through with it it would kill him but his soul would be ok. Technically both souls should have survived but he would still be ...
I had an epiphany but didnt want to erase all that...it might help someone else..
Ok Harry didn't die because
1 He was never a true Horcrux, voldy'd soul had attached itself to him but the words to make him a horcrux were never said, so the connection between them was unstable.
2 Hermione says to Ron at the beginning of book 7 that "if I picked up a sword right now, Ron, and ran you through with it, I wouldn’t damage your soul at all...whatever happens to your
body, your soul will survive untouched...But it’s the other way round with a Horcrux. The fragment of soul inside it depends on it’s container, its enchanted body, for survival, It can’t exist without it.” She said it all right there. Harry died when that curse hit him. As his body died though his soul survived like Dumbledore says "Your soul is whole, and
completely your own, Harry.” Voldy had destroyed his bit of soul in Harry when he killed him, it couldnt survive outside of the body it was in because it was never meant to it was never a real Horcrux just an unstable bit of soul. When Harry died it had to die too.
3 Harry's soul then was able to return to its body since as Dumbledore said it was whole still and completely his own. The protection given to him by his mother, kept alive, however inexplicably, by Voldemort's blood kept his soul from truly leaving when Harry was killed. He woke up back in the Forest.
4. Harry is allowed to kill Voldy because although the protection is in Voldemorts veins, its not meant to protect him, just Harry. Voldemort keeps the protection alive for Harry inside his body, so even though Harry turns 17 the protection still survives since Voldy's blood has Harry's enchanted blood. Maybe if he had waited til Harry was 17 and the protection was broken before taking Harry's blood he might have been able to kill him. Seeing as how Harry's blood carried a protective charm at the time he took it, the charm was alive and well in voldemorts blood up until the scene in the forest and would keep Harry safe if Voldemort tried to kill him, it would keep his soul tethered to life as long as Voldemort was alive.
So I answered my own question. Harry actually did die, but his soul survived.
