I heard that getting into the fiction world takes a lot of time. The best way I heard to get a fiction book published is to first write a non fiction book and then write a fiction book. Is this true, does it really work this way?

The non fiction book would be a great start. But you have to have something interesting to say. I plan to write a non fiction book about a disease I have that is so rare that many people don't know how to treat it. So my best advice is to write something that is not on the market like in my case.

No. First off, you usually need a platform to get a non fiction book published. That is to say, you need to be known or important with something interesting to say. Also publishers are not going to care if you have a nonfiction book published if you are offering them a fiction book. They want to know you have a following with fiction.
Getting publishing credentials is a good idea. You can do this by submitting short stories to magazines, build up creds for yourself, so that the big dogs take you seriously.
Of course, you can always try submitting your fiction book first. I hear that works for a rare author or two. What is really important beyond publishing credits is how well your book is written, how much that kind of story is in demand, and if a publisher thinks they can sell it.
I would not suggest writing a non fiction book first if writing fiction is your real goal.

It's not required but is recommended. Just writing something isn't good enough thousands of people everyday want their book published he has to edit it extremely or else the published reject it immediately. Also it is possible to publish books without a fancy company. The sources below is a do it yourself but it can only be bought online. Borders also has a self-publishing thing that does hold in their stores but it can cost anywhere from 150 to almost 300 if I'm not mistaken. Book selling is extremely hard particular if it's realized that the average book only sells about 500 copies. Make sure you're boyfriend knows that he's certain about publishing his book and be very careful on you're decision. Lastly at book stores there are books you can buy that have a list of publishes and their preferences in what books they're looking for. I hope this helps you, and best of luck on the book!

Yes I would say start with a non fiction book. There are many publishers that will publish a non fiction. And once you have your foot in the door with that you can publish your fiction book. But you have to make sure your non fiction is something that someone actually cares about enough to read.

As a published author and screenwriter I can say, nothing is easy about getting your foot in the door. That said, great writing is great writing. So write what you feel you can do and make it great. Pick up a copy of Writers Market (library will have one) and start looking at what publisher and agents want. Pay attention to the small presses, they publish less books but their door is easier to open. Also Writer's Digest magazine can help you and it provides top 25 sites for writers.
This will get you started. Good luck and I'll see you at the TOP!
