Tony Hillerman and Jim Butcher are two I can think off of the top of my head. Tony Hillerman writes very amazing mysteries that have interesting tie ins with Navajo culture, and Jim Butcher writes a very amazing Horror/Mystery series, Dresden Files, and Code Alexandria, which is fantasy.

a somewhat series i'm reading is the Halo series. they are based on the game, and are filled with action, fantasy and a little bit of creepy stuff. they are written by a couple of different authors....

the only drawback is that they are not written on a hiigher level, so they are fairly easy to read. i'm on the 3rd one (there's 4 that i know of....) and i just started reading them all on monday....
