Question:
Did your parents read to you as a child? Did this influence your love/hate of reading?

I would love to hear if reading with parents when young influences children to love reading as they grow. Your experiences?

My whole family members love reading except for me. I dont get the fun staring a novel, figuring out whats gonna happen to this guy/girl next but I wish i had the passion to read.

My parents read to me every day. They even recorded themselves reading my favorite books on cassette tape so that I could read along anytime I wanted, before I learned how to read. They also entered me in summer library reading contests where you got a prize for reading the most books or the most pages. It was just a certificate, but it had my name and a gold seal on it. I think all of that helped a lot. I am an adult now and I read at least a book a week, although usually I have more than one book going at once. I read everything, fiction, non-fiction, poetry... It definately had a huge impact on me.

My Parents did stimulate reading by either reading to me or letting me have a new book instead of a toy. I now ( I'm 25) read 2 to 3 books a week, I practically eat books. I also have a 2 year old daughter who loves sitting with her books, sometimes hours at end, looking through all her books and speaking to herself, saying what the item is as she flips a page, or counting the items. I read every night to her. It does make all the difference to read to your kids. Let them pick their own books, even if they pick 5 of them , read them, they will benefit from it later in life. I know I did.

My dad and grandmother read to me and I was reading "picture books" on my own by the age of three or four. I always have a book with me. And I read to my daughter when she was little. When she's home from college, she'll still come curl up next to me and ask me to read one of her childhood favorites "just because." When she marries and has children, I'll read to them, too.

Books and a love of reading is the greatest gift an adult can give a child.

I learned to read with my parents when I was very young, and really enjoy reading now.

All my family are very keen on books, so I guess that reading when young must have a positive effect.

With work I take part in a programme called right to read, where we act as volunteers to help with reading in schools. I'm currently helping with 9-10 year olds who are a little behind their peers, and it's blindingly obvious that some of them have never read with their parents. Breaks my heart that does.

Yes, always have books around. Even my 3 year old will pick up books and "read" for 20 minutes at a time. Little kids can practice while you do other things. Comic strip books are great for kids who don't initially feel like reading. Hope I helped.

My stepmother would read to me as a young child (5-6) occasionally when they had visitation, but other than absolutely loving "Stand Back," Said the Elephant, "I'm Going to Sneeze!" even to this day (I'm about to be 34 and read it to my children funny voices and all, lol) I don't think her reading to me really had an effect unless it was extremely delayed since I didn't become a bookworm until I was 12.

My parents never read to me and thought I was the strangest child when I wanted to own a book. They thought that was wasteful.

As a mother, I have read to my children all kinds of stories. They love to read and excel in school in Reading and Language Arts.

PS. We have a housefull of books, Each of my children have their own little library and so do I.

My parents didnt read to me much unless i asked but i remember them encouraging me to buy books. And they gave me books as presents too. In fact many ppl in my family did the same, buy me books. And i remember loving the spell , yes the spell of new book even then!

I loved to read as a child and that love stayed with me growing up, is still very much a part of me.

Give me a good book anytime, i prefer it over other things:)

I don't actually remember my mother reading to me (though she did every night) but she taught me to read long before I went to school and I've never stopped since! I had a huge bookcase full of books as a child, from Enid Blyton's famous 5 type books and school stores to Aesop's fables and ladybird reference books about people from history. I still read avidly and have passed this love on to my own son. He has always had books, from cloth ones as a tiny baby upwards. He's in Y1 at school, but his school reading books are from the Y3 classroom's suppply and at home he's reading things like Horrid Henry and the aforementioned Enid Blyton. Despite his being really good at reading himself now, I still always read him a bed time story. Sometimes it's a chapter of the book he's reading and sometimes it's one of his old favourite picture story books. I love that time with him at bed time, it's my favourite time of the day.

Please tell me, how could anyone Hate reading? Reading is exploring, learning, experiencing etc... I cannot imagine how the average person can learn enough to survive without reading.

Reading with parents is the only natural way forward. Like all parts of education, learning to enjoy reading is more important than what you read; at first. Once the individual becomes an avid reader then he/she is truly in command of their own destiny.

as a child reading was a part of my everyday life. And i think it effected the way i love to read today. In my psychology class we did a study on how reading effects children and the majority or students who associated reading with their parents and didnt like reading now, said that they had a bad childhood kind of like their reading is symbolic of the way they feel towards their parents and it was vise versa for students who liked to read. This is just majority we had some that werent parallell or didnt do this. hopes this intrest you!

Yes my parents did help and encourage me to read. My mother bought me a torch and a book one day and told me not to read after 8.30 pm which was lights out. She knew I would of course. I remember being very impatient to learn to read at school and being proud when i could read from a simple early learning book :-)

my parents did read to me, but they didn't swallow me in books. I had to find my own love of reading when i discovered the world hidden inside the pages. But i believe getting children away from television and make believing as much as they can as well as reading will help a child to tap into their creativity and enjoy reading.

The best book about the pleasure of reading with children and helping hem enjoying books is "The reader's right" by Daniel Pennac

For me, it was mostly seeing my parents burried in books that made me become a bookworm, I kept nagging for them to read my magazines out loud when I was small too. Frustration helped!!!

My parents did not read to me as a child. It is something I always enjoyed personally. I have read extensively to my children. They enjoy reading & I encourage it by gifting them with fiction which suits their personalities/tastes. I was able to read the first four books in the Harry Potter series to them before they considered themselves to old to be read to any longer.

My parents read to me & they both also loved to read themselves, there were always books at home. I still read anything & everything. My husband never reads anything unless he wants to know how to do something - he reads a lot of Car Manuals !

My parents read to me when I was young and I love to read, but they also they also read the same books to my younger brother and he didnt develop the same reading habit that I did, though I expect he still enjoys reading more than other boys his age, even though he doesnt do it that much.

no I was never read to, and took to reading at school but again was over looked at an early age due to shyness.

it wasn't until later in life, (when I had more time) around 37 that I took to reading. Ever since, it has been a pleasure.

Yes, my parents read to me. I remeber a series called Blackberry Farm, which my mum reading.

I think more importantly, when I was old enough to read, we used to read things together. I remember reading "George's Marvellous Medicine" with my mum and her laughing more than me in some places.

If I ever have children, I will defintely read with them (any excuse to revisit Roald Dahl).

My parents read to me when I was little. I loved it. When I started to read, I would read out loud to them. My dad and I still read books out loud, like Oliver Twist. It is a great way to bond.

My parents did not read to me as a child and I love to read. However, I can vividly recall numerous occasions that teachers and librarians would read to my class. I remember loving the stories and listening to them intently. I just can't recall one story than my parents read to me, so I assume that they didn't. I love to read now, I have a book with me all the time. Thank Goodness for Teachers and Librarians! ........Rephrase.........Thank Goodness for ANYONE who reads to a child!

My parents read to me a lot. I don't read a lot now that I'm an adult.

It's because of my lack of free time. I like to read, but life gets in the way.

I love to read! My parents read to me every day and severely restricted TV viewing to ensure that I read. To this day (I'm 32), I prefer a good book to the "boob tube" any day.
